Why a papered ceiling is harder than a wall
On a ceiling, you work overhead, against gravity, with wet paper that wants to fall. The pattern has to line up in two directions — along the strips and against every wall — and ceiling lines are almost never perfectly straight. That's why ceiling wallpaper is one of the jobs DIYers most often regret, and one we plan especially carefully.
Where a papered ceiling works
- Powder rooms — small, dramatic, and often papered on walls and ceiling together
- Dining rooms, around a chandelier medallion
- Bedrooms and nurseries — the view from bed
- Walk-in closets, laundry rooms, mudrooms and breakfast nooks
- Covered porches (with the right material) and tray or coffered ceilings
- Restaurants, boutiques and retail stores
How we install ceiling wallpaper
- Plan the layout. We find the visual center of the room (usually the light fixture) and decide which direction the strips run, so the pattern is centered and the cut edges fall evenly at the walls.
- Prep the surface. Ceilings are often textured or popcorn. We check whether texture needs to be scraped or skim-coated, then prime with a wallcovering primer.
- Set up safe staging. Planks and proper ladders let us support each strip along its full length — never balanced on a chair.
- Hang and support. Strips are folded (booked) for handling, offered up to a straight reference line and smoothed out from the center.
- Trim around fixtures. Power to the light is shut off at the breaker; we trim around boxes and medallions so the fixture covers the cut.
Walls and ceiling together
If you are papering both, the order and the pattern match between ceiling and walls are decided in advance — some designs are meant to flow from wall onto ceiling, others look best with a clean break at the crown molding. We'll go through it with you on site.

Frequently asked questions
Which wallpapers work on ceilings?
Lighter non-woven and paste-the-wall papers are easiest overhead and come off cleanly later. Heavy vinyls, grasscloth and murals can also go on ceilings with more preparation — we'll advise based on your paper.
Can you paper over a popcorn ceiling?
Not directly. Popcorn or heavy texture must be removed or skim-coated smooth and primed first. Older popcorn can contain asbestos, so it should be tested before it is disturbed.
Should the ceiling be done before or after the walls?
Usually the ceiling goes first so the wall strips can neatly cover the ceiling edge, unless the design calls for something different.
Do I need to remove the light fixture?
We take down or lower fixtures and covers as needed, with power off, and reinstall them after.
