Wallpaper shows everything underneath it

Dents, nail pops, patched holes, tape seams, glossy paint and orange-peel texture all telegraph through wallpaper — especially smooth, dark, metallic or thin papers. Most wallpaper problems people blame on the installer actually start with the wall. That's why prep is part of every job we quote, and why we also offer it as a stand-alone service when you're getting walls ready.

What wall prep can include

  • Inspection under raking light to find every flaw
  • Drywall repair — holes, cracks, nail pops, dents, corner bead
  • Sealing torn drywall after old wallpaper removal (see wallpaper removal)
  • Texture smoothing — skim coating orange-peel or knockdown walls to a Level 5 finish
  • Sanding and dust control
  • Deglossing shiny paint so primer bonds
  • Wallcovering primer — the right type for your paper and room

Why wallcovering primer matters

A dedicated wallcovering primer does three jobs: it gives the paste an even surface to grip, it lets us slide strips into perfect alignment, and it lets the paper be removed later without tearing up the drywall. For grasscloth and other papers with visible seams we use a tinted primer close to the paper color, so hairline gaps don't flash white. In bathrooms and laundry rooms we choose primers with mildew resistance.

Our prep process

  1. Protect floors and furniture, remove outlet and switch covers.
  2. Inspect the walls and mark every repair.
  3. Repair, then skim coat as needed; allow proper drying time (longer in damp Pacific Northwest weather).
  4. Sand smooth and remove dust.
  5. Apply the correct wallcovering primer and let it cure before hanging.

New construction and remodels

On new drywall, we look for a smooth Level 4–5 finish and seal the drywall paper with primer so future removal won't damage it. If you're mid-remodel, tell your contractor wallpaper is planned — it changes how the walls should be finished.

Frequently asked questions

Can wallpaper go on textured walls?

Textured walls should be skim coated smooth first, or the texture will show through. Some very thick papers hide light texture, but smoothing gives a far better result.

Do I need primer if my walls are already painted?

Yes. Regular wall paint isn't designed for wallpaper paste. A wallcovering primer gives better adhesion and makes future removal much easier.

How long does wall prep add to the job?

Light patching and primer can be done the same day or the day before. Skim coating a whole room adds drying time — usually one to two extra days.

Can you prep the walls and I hang the paper myself?

Yes. We offer wall preparation as a stand-alone service.
